I’m creating this guide because, as is normal, I learned the hard way. I din’t follow these steps and got burned. Maybe you can save yourself some agrivation by following this inspection guide. I hope you find it helpful!

When picking up a cargo trailer directly from the manufacturer or dealer, it’s crucial to perform a thorough inspection to ensure that the trailer is built correctly, meets your specifications, and is free from any defects or damages incurred during manufacturing or transportation. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you verify that your new cargo trailer is exactly what you ordered and is built to your highest standards.

Keep in mind that once you sign the bottom line you are responsible for anything you missed. It’s your money and your time that’s important and the manufacturer and dealer does not always have your best interests in mind. I’d rather trust my inspection over depending on the manufacturer to stand behind their work after I’ve signed off on the purchase.

“A good sales rep doesn’t sell a product; they sell a vision, a solution, a relationship, and occasionally, a good laugh.”

I would even recommend letting your salesman know during the buying process that you will be performing a thorough inspection on delivery. Depending on the relationship your salesman has with the manufacturer, it may help in the build process to ensure a higher priority in workmanship and attention to detail. While I would like to think that the manufacturer is focused on workmanship and quality without getting a heads-up from the sales rep, I know that is not always the case. Often, these trailers are produced as fast as possible and quality is an afterthought, if a thought at all.

Pre-Pickup Preparation

Before even showing up to pick up your trailer review your order. If you have any customizations be sure you review those to refresh your memory. Sometimes there’s weeks or even months between when you order your trailer and when you pick it up.

Have everything written down and printed out unless you have an eidetic memory! Once you arrive to pick up your trailer you may be overwhelmed or too excited to depend on remembering everything you need to do to ensure a good experience.

“Sales reps are like magicians: they can make objections disappear with just a few words.”

Know beforehand that a dealer is likely to tell you that they have already inspected it and you don’t have anything to worry about. Those words mean nothing after you sign for your new trailer! They will pull out the papers you signed and point to the part that says you agreed that everything was in order and acceptable. Getting warrenty work done may be even more frustrating! Trust your gut and don’t accept anything that isn’t what you agreed to. Be willing to stand your ground and don’t accept sales pitches, no matter how likable your sales rep is.

  • Professional Assistance: If you’re unsure about any aspect of the inspection, don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance to avoid overlooking critical issues. It may be the best $200.00 you spend.

By following this comprehensive inspection guide, you can ensure that your new cargo trailer is built to your specifications, functions correctly, and is ready for safe and efficient use. Taking the time to perform a detailed inspection at pickup can save you from potential headaches and additional costs down the line.

In time, I’ll expand on these as I get feedback. There are a lot of details to look for and every trailer is different. I’m working on a detailed printable checklist to make the process as painless as possible.

The best advice I can offer is to look at everything and take your time. Be willing to wait for things to be fixed or corrected before signing off. If they offer some kind of rebate to accept the defect and that’s acceptable to you be sure to get it in writing before signing off. They may try to convince you that they need to close the books on this deal but that’s just a pressure tactic that you can ignore.
